chutzpah, pizzazz and a pot of china tea...
EPISODE ONE...............CAST LIST...............TRIVIA QUIZ

Lionel is walking down the street and stops at a photo-taking booth. He opens the curtain and there is a young couple inside. The young man says "do you mind grand-dad?" and quickly recloses the curtain. Lionel waits his turn just outside the booth. A Chinese couple with two young girls walk up and wait next to him. They obviously don't speak the language and there's a lot of polite smiling back and forth -- something that, naturally, makes Lionel very uncomfortable. The couple in the booth is laughing. Lionel asks if they are just "snogging" in there. The couple comes out. The young man shakes his head at Lionel -- he says the trouble with the people in Lionel's generation is that they're obsessed with sex. He glances over at the Chinese family and says to Lionel -- "go on, take your family in."

Lionel goes into the booth and puts the money in the machine. He's not quite sure how it works because he sits there at attention, glaring into the camera for what seems to him to be a long time. He bends forward to check on it and the camera flashes and takes a picture of his bald spot. He swears mildly and repositions himself, smiling broadly. Outside, the young man asks what he's up to in the booth Lionel turns to tell him to clear off and the camera again snaps. He composes himself. Suddenly the Chinese fellow sticks his head into the booth. Again, the flash.

Scene shifts to Jean's living room. She's holding a strip of photographs, telling Lionel he "looks like a frightened horse in that one." She asks why there is a Chinese gentleman in one of the photos. Judith comes in and laughs at the photographs. She, too, wants to know about the Chinaman. Lionel said he will explain over dinner. Judith cheerily responds "we're going out to dinner, are we?" Jean says we are and wants to know if she has anything to add. She's made herself quite clear and goes upstairs to get her bag. Judith tells Lionel she's glad that he and her mother are going out to dinner and assures him that she no longer has a crush on him -- it was just a silly, romantic notion. He was far too old for her. He looks as though he's been insulted. He asks her what "snogging" is called these days and she doesn't know, but asks if that's what he plans on doing with Jean. At first he says no, but then he hesitates and turns a bit red-faced. She wants to know if it's just companionship then. "You make it sound like we should both be wearing woolly hats," he says. They turn to leave and Judith says she's tired and won't be waiting up, she's telling them this just in case they want "to have a good snog."

Lionel and Jean are at the restaurant. Jean is laughing to herself and Lionel wonders if he has food on him or something. She observes that he doesn't laugh as much as he used to and he thinks there is less to laugh about now. She asks why Lionel had those photos taken. He said he wanted to see what he looked like because Alistair wants a picture of him on the cover of the book. He asks Jean if she'd like a brandy. She does want one, but the bar is closed. Lionel tells her that he knows a trick that will allow her to have the brandy after hours. He calls the waiter to the table and asks for "China tea." He stresses it -- China tea. The waiter appears to understand. Lionel is proud of himself. It is a trick that Alistair has taught him. The conversation turns back to the book cover. Jean thinks he should be flattered that Alistair wants his picture on the cover. He claims he doesn't like to have his photo taken because he tends to look "sulky." The waiter comes with their tea. Lionel says "it's like Prohibition." Jean starts to pour. "It's tea," she observes.

Jean is back at her office talking with Sandy and Judith. She's concerned because she thinks the book is a really big thing for Lionel -- much bigger than he lets on. She's pretty sure he needs the money. Trouble is, she observes "we've all read it." Judith tells Sandy that Lionel and Jean went out the night before. Lionel didn't come into the house afterwards and there wasn't too much activity on the doorstep either, Judith reports to Sandy. They are talking as though Jean is not in the room. Jean asks if they talk like this behind her back. They inform her that those conversations are "much juicier."

There is a very peppy knock at the office door -- a knock that can only be associated with Alistair. Sandy goes out to open the door and Jean and Judith overhear him flattering Sandy effusively. He walks in and gives them another line about three beautiful women all craving his attention. Jean stops him from going on because she called him for something serious. She's worried about Lionel and wants to know if the book will sell. "I'm publishing it," he says. It might do reasonably well, he says, with a little hype and a "pick-me-up-and-buy-me" cover. Jean doesn't understand because she knows he wants Lionel's picture on the cover. Something doesn't make sense to her. No matter what Lionel means to her, he just doesn't have a "pick-me-up-and-buy-me" kind of face. He explains that they'll just have to improve on it.

Jean has gone off to prepare Lionel for Alistair's improvements. Meanwhile Judy and Sandy remain at the office and discuss what they know about the book cover Alistair envisions. It involves Lionel in front of a jungle background while wearing a silly hat. They aren't sure what Lionel will think about this, but Judith thinks it might be something profane. They know that Alistair's purpose is to suggest danger and excitement. It should work out okay because Alistair gets rich from selling books so he must know what he's doing.

Lionel arrives at Jean's home. He's concerned because she called him to come and made it sound urgent. She told him she made him some sandwiches, but he pointed out that she obviously didn't take the day off work to make him sandwiches. He wants her to tell him why he's really there. She tells Lionel that she bumped into Alistair and they were discussing the cover of the book and Alistair told her it "needed something". "What's he got in mind?" Lionel wanted to to know -- "Me lying naked on a pile of coffee beans?" Jean agreed that some of Alistair's ideas are odd, but she contends that all good ideas sound half-baked to begin with. Lionel tells her that he'll find out what Alistair has in mind the next day, because there is a photo session scheduled. Jean is worried and asks him to please co-operate. He promises not to do anything foolish.

Judith and Sandy are walking down the street the next day. They're chatting about Jean, who came back to the office the day before after spending three hours with Lionel. They speculate that they must have spent about 1/2 hour talking about the book and the rest in unbridled passion although they conclude that they're both too old to be "unbridled". Judith says its too bad that her mom wasn't a sea otter because sea otters bite each other in the nose when they make love. This allows anyone to tell what happened. As they approach the office they see Lionel standing outside the front door and he looks confused, as though he isn't sure whether or not to go in. He decides he should and opens the door for them. They both stop and stare at his nose. "Probably has worn off by now anyhow," they decide.

Lionel walks into Jean's office. She wasn't expecting him. Judy leaves and says she'll eat in the other office with Sandy. She's always grinning like she's doing them a favor by leaving them alone. Jean excuses herself and goes out to talk with the pair of them. She interrupts their continuing speculation about the status of Lionel and herself and explains that a client will be there around 3 p.m. and it is very important that he like them because it will mean four or five or five secretaries for three months. She goes back into her office.

It turns out that Lionel is anxious about the photo shoot that afternoon. He wants Jean to go with him. Jean tells him she can't go. He looks looks disappointed. She says she can feel the tension shooting out of him like gamma rays. It just doesn't make sense to him that he's so nervous about such a small thing since he was "actually SHOT at" during the war. "it wasn't just the mule that kicked you then?" she says. Lionel was telling her about his nerves and she just had started to comment about his "cold feet" when Judith peered in the door She heard the comment and a big grin took command of her face and she just looks at them stupidly. She wanted to know if they wanted coffee. Lionel doesn't get it at first, but Jean tells him that Judith has a vivid imagination. Now he gets it -- cold feet. He tells her he'd better be off and he leaves. She wishes him good luck.

Lionel is introduced to the people on Alistair's set -- "Wondersville" he calls it. Lionel says it looks like a set for a Tarzan film. Alistair says it is Kenya -- what most people want Kenya to look like. Lionel thinks that if that is so, most people are idiots. A still-cheery Alistair tries to convince him that those people are potential buyers of his book. He tries to make the point that even though no-one has ever been to Oz, everyone still has some idea about what it looks like. Alistair tells Lionel to trust him. He says they'll have to hurry because the photographer charges megabucks. Lionel is ready. Alistair tells him to get into the costume first. Lionel is bewildered.

Jean is still at the office, but she can't concentrate because she's so preoccupied with Lionel and how he must be doing at the photo shoot. She concludes that "he's only a client" and what the heck, she's going to go to the photo session after all. She tells Judith and Sandy to deal with the client and tells them if they can't handle it they'll be fired. She's joking.

Lionel is all decked out as though he's going on safari, he comes back into the "jungle" telling Alistair he will not wear that hat because he was a "coffee planter, not a white hunter." The assistant brings him the rifle. He has no intention of holding a rifle. Jean enters. Alistair hopes she can talk some sense into him, but she's somewhat tentative.
She's not sure that she made the right decision by coming. Lionel tells her it's okay if she laughs at him She tells him he looks sort of rugged. She convinces him that he looks fine and he agrees to wear the hat. Alistair calls for the sexy model he hired to pose with Lionel "for insurance." Jean doubts that she's selling policies. She certainly is another surprise. Lionel is not sure what her purpose is. Alistair explains:

ALISTAIR: Pick-me-up-and-buy-me. Danger, adventure, sex -- she's the sex.
JEAN: She looks like all three if you ask me.
She's supposed to be Lionel's woman. Lionel tells Alistair he never saw a woman who looked like that in Kenya in his entire life. "Pretendo-time," suggests Alistair. Lionel will go forward. Alistair surveys the scene -- "Monster!"

The photographer thinks that Lionel should look more determined. Lionel thinks the thought of his killing Alistair would make him look more determined. Time for the blonde. She walks in, with torn tight dress, adjusts her cleavage, gets down on one knee in front of Lionel and grabs hold of his leg. Lionel ices up. "What is she doing?" he wants to know. Jean stands watching. She tries to put her hand over her mouth but she can't keep from laughing. Not a little smile, either. She's really breaking up over this. Lionel can't believe she's finding this so funny.

Jean comes back into the office and she doesn't look very upbeat. The girls question Jean about how the session went, but she says it all depends on your point of view. The meeting with the important client didn't go well either. Apparently he wasn't happy that Jean missed the meeting. He didn't like having to deal with young girls. Jean says they're not exactly in the street because of this lost client, but they are "hanging by a thread." Lionel walks in and says, sarcastically "Thanks for waiting." She points out that he wasn't in a very good mood when she left. They begin to bicker again. He doesn't believe she met Alistair by accident. She insists that the blonde with the cleavage wasn't her idea. He told her he wanted her to show up, but not to laugh at him. She tries to tell him that selling that book is in the hands of the young. "Children" he scoffs. "Successful children," she reminds him. Judith comes in, seemingly to bring a tray of tea, but finally admits that she has been listening at the door and she wants to set Lionel straight. He's being very ungrateful. She tells him that by going that day to the photo shoot Jean lost a very important client and several thousand pounds, but she did it to please him. Judith leaves.

"You did laugh at me," he whines. She tells him to have some tea. He supposes there's not much chance that what's inside the teapot is brandy. "None whatsoever." They laugh.
